A Sandy Springs man recently admitted to causing a highly dangerous crash on Interstate 285. After owing up to his role in the accident, a judge sentenced him to a hefty fine, a year of probation and a mandatory defensive driving course.

The man is quite fortunate no one was killed in the car accident. Several people, however, were injured, including the driver of a tanker truck, who had to be pulled out of his vehicle to safety.

The accident occurred when the Sandy Springs man apparently failed to stay in his lane while moving along the highway. According to reports, he was simply not paying enough attention while behind the wheel. He drifted into another lane, which caused a chain reaction accident after he clipped a Publix truck. The truck then veered into another tractor-trailer, which led to both trucks falling off an overpass and onto Georgia State Route 400 below. The auto accident backed up traffic for nearly five hours.

A dangerous scenario

It appears as if the man at fault received lighter penalties that he otherwise would have based on the fact that he admitted to his role in the crash. It also helped that no one was severely injured or killed as a result of his inattention. Still, this was his sixth driving offense in the last five years, and his negligence did lead to the injuries of several innocent people. It’s unknown whether the individuals injured will pursue any civil litigation against the man.
