Michael Brown’s Family Will File Wrongful Death Lawsuit

The story of the shooting death of Michael Brown by former Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson has dominated national news over much of the past year. Now the story has resurfaced as Brown’s family has decided to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Wilson and the city.

The news of the lawsuit came just a day after the U.S. Department of Justice formally announced that there would be no federal charges filed against Wilson stemming from last summer’s shooting. The family’s attorney made the announcement while expressing disappointment in the DOJ’s decision.

The Justice Department did, however, release a report indicating that the city of Ferguson and its police department routinely engaged in unconstitutional patrolling procedures that discriminated against the African-American residents of the city. It also released emails that provided clear evidence of racial bias on the part of police officers in the city.

Attorneys representing Brown’s family say that they hope the wrongful death claim allows there to be at least some level accountability established after the fatal incident. Many local alderpersons and residents continue to call for the Ferguson police chief to resign from his position, and there have still been numerous issues with riots and protests in the city even after the announcement by a Grand Jury several months ago that Wilson would not be indicted.
